Riga, Latvia — The LEONSEGS project recently played an active role at the ESA Big Data from Space (BiDS) 2025 event, held in Riga from 29 September to 3 October. This conference serves as a crucial forum for industry experts, academia, and EU institutions to share user needs and define the future roadmap for Big Data from Space. 

The core objective of BiDS 2025 was to explore how insights derived from diverse space domains—including Earth Observation (EO), Navigation, and Space Science—can provide a robust foundation for evidence-informed decision-making on global challenges like climate change and sustainable competitiveness. 

LEONSEGS partners PLUS and Aistech Space attended the event, contributing to discussions across several key themes, particularly those concerning the interoperability of solutions, automation of big EO data processing and analysis and cloud-native, digital infrastructures for big data. 

The project aligns directly with BiDS’s central ambition: promoting open science, building on FAIR data principles, and leveraging initiatives like the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem and Destination Earth. The discussions highlighted the pressing industry need for the kind of lightweight, federated, and interactive solutions that LEONSEGS is developing. 

The presence of the partners underscored the project’s vital role in transitioning breakthrough data science technologies into operational applications. By engaging with key stakeholders at BiDS 2025, the LEONSEGS partners ensured the project’s vision for a federated ground segment remains aligned with the highest demands of the European space industry and its ambition to maximise the benefit of space-derived data.
