LEONSEGS, co-funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe programme, stands for the Large Earth Observation New Space Ecosystem Ground Segment.
The project’s fundamental mission is to solve the crippling fragmentation within the Earth Observation (EO) industry and unlock the full potential of multi-mission data.
The system is designed as a federated environment where diverse EO data providers collaborate using harmonised interfaces. This unified structure is governed by a central automated multi-mission service, which coordinates all assets to produce complex, tailored EO products for the end-user.
This architecture specifically supports the dynamic New Space sector by integrating two main types of providers into one system:
By establishing this standardised, automated framework, LEONSEGS aims to provide essential market access to new and existing players who wish to externalise their ground segment operations, fundamentally improving operational efficiency and expanding the catalogue of available complex EO products.
Prototype EO end-to-end automatic mechanisms
Design an automated, scalable and flexible multi-mission ground segment
To improve End-Users experience
Create a sustainable EU collaborative New Space lowcost ecosystem
Promote innovative entrepreneurship
Enhance EU EO players´ leadership worldwide
Increase the exploitation
of EU space assets.
The success of LEONSEGS hinges on bringing together diverse expertise from across the European space sector. The consortium is a multidisciplinary team combining world leadership in ground segments, cutting-edge academic research, market access expertise, and the agility of a New Space operator.
The world-wide leader in ground segments, with vast experience in coordinating international collaborative research projects. They bring a deep, established expertise in mission control, flight dynamics, and complex data processing systems essential for managing large-scale satellite operations.
PLUS (Academic Research): A highly reputed academic partner known for its cutting-edge expertise in Earth Observation (EO) processing. They contribute advanced knowledge in geospatial analysis, data science, and innovative semantic processing techniques critical for transforming raw satellite data into actionable insights.
F6S (Community & Ecosystem Builder): a leading global founder and startup network that helps private and public sector entities around the world to promote, communicate and disseminate technical and research projects. F6S stands for F-ounder-S. The mission is to help founders and startups grow to solve the world’s pressing social, economic, environmental, sustainability and innovation problems. In addition to F6S’ work with governmental entities, we also work with corporates, investors, research institutions, programs, universities and others in the global startup ecosystem. F6S tools deliver company growth through grants, funding, investment, pilot contracts, partnerships, jobs & talent recruitment, company services and more.
AISTECH (New Space Operator/Data Provider): An agile New Space company focused on generating affordable, recurrent, high-resolution thermal imagery. Aistech operates its own satellite constellation and serves as a key data provider, bringing expertise in on-demand thermal data acquisition and integration.
MESEO is a collaborative research project, designed to contribute to developing and deploying global, space-based services, applications and data and to foster competitiveness of the European space sector. MESEO aims to design, prototype and demonstrate an open, flexible and scalable multi-mission, End-to-End Earth Observation system for massive satellite data processing.
The project aims to build a collaborative digital ecosystem, centred on a Coordinator Centre with distributed processing functions, which can improve performance of different steps of the data processing chain.
